THE 3 TOP RULES IN MAKEUP:
- There are no rules.
- There are no rules.
- There are no rules.
Makeup is an expression of your personality. Experimenting with your makeup is the best way to figure out what suits your face and your style!
GENERAL TIPS:
- Try matching your face to the place (for example, a smokey eye for a night out – great! A smokey eye for your daughter’s soccer practice – probably not).
- Think of your face as a canvas and your makeup color is the paint. A marked up, dirty canvas is a distraction from a beautiful picture. When you apply makeup to a face with inconsistencies (like redness, sun spots, blemishes or dark circles), all of those things compete with your color and nothing works! Instead, focus on your “canvas” first. Conceal darkness around your eyes. Then, create a sheer, even veil with a foundation. This will eliminate distractions and allow your makeup to work more effectively.
- In the end, we don’t want to see makeup, just its effects. So keep it real!
- Remember: Relax! It’s just makeup. It washes off.
SMOOCH SECRETS…SHHH! GOOF-PROOF TIPS!
SKIN
Problem: It’s time for my makeup to grow up, but I’m worried I’ll pick the wrong foundation color. Help!
Tip: Color - When picking your color, go for shades that have a slight yellow or golden undertone. This will make the foundation blend and mesh with your skin giving you a natural, healthy glow.
Trick: Swatching - When you swatch your foundation, apply a stripe from the cheekbone all the way down to your chin line. The goal is to not be able to tell where it IS and where it ISN’T, other than the fact that your skin looks more flawless in that spot. If you can see it ON your skin, it’s back to the drawing board, my friend!
Bonus insider tip: With a Smooch! customized foundation formula created just for you, you never have to worry about finding the right color. Stop in for a worry-free experience.
Problem: I love the look of bronzer, but when I use it, I end up looking like a clown!
Tip: When it comes to bronzer, it’s all about location, location, location! Use our Deluxe Soft Fan Brush, which does most of the work for you! It offers precise application because of its thin, but strong form
Trick: To apply, start at the temple, and create a soft, curvy “w,” sweeping up to the apples of the cheeks and over the bridge of your nose. Continue the same stroke on the other side of the face. Then create a ‘T.” Cross the T on the forehead and take the long stroke down to the bridge of the nose. BLEND with a Kabuki brush…it will be as if you were kissed by the sun!
Warning: Beware the bronzer with too much orange! Opt for one with a touch of rose or pink mixed in with a softer, more neutral brown, like Smooch! Studio’s ‘Two Faced’ or ‘Talk of the Town’ Bronzing Powders.
LIPS
Problem: My lip color doesn’t last and those ‘superstay’ products dry my lips out. Help!
Tip #1 Smooch! Studio’s exclusive ‘Stay Put’ product is the key! Long lasting color without drying your lips. Using a camouflage brush, lightly apply a thin layer of Stay Put! Under your lipstick.
Tip #2 Lining your lips with a smooth, creamy lipliner holds your lip color longer and keeps it from bleeding. Bonus insider tip: For more staying power, try coloring in your entire lip with your lipliner before you apply your lip color.
EYES
Problem: My eyeshadow doesn’t show up and never stays on! I’ve given up…Why Bother?
Tip: Clean your canvas so your eyeshadow pops. Use the Camouflage brush to apply a healthy coat of Stay Put to your lid from the lashline up to the area underneath of your eyebrow. Apply shadow directly on top. Your shadow will look as good at 10 p.m. as it did at 10 a.m.!! Smooch! Studio’s exclusive ‘Stay Put’ product takes care of the two-fold problem on the eyelids: oil and heat as well as darkness on the lid.
Problem: I’m not sure what to do with more than one eyeshadow color. Help!
Tip: Get the most bang for your buck using a lighter and a deeper color. Light opens up and dark creates shape and depth.
Trick: Base: Apply Stay Put! as a base for your shadow. Light color: Brush the lighter color (naked pink works on most skintones and is very neutral) over the entire eye from the lashline all the way up to the eyebrow using the round angle brush.
Dark color: Next, use the crease brush to apply a slightly darker color (Fly eyeshadow is a goof-proof color for this look). Look directly at yourself in the mirror and raise your eyebrows. Following the shape of the eyebrow, apply this color on the edge of the browbone slightly above the crease creating an arc that mimics that of the eyebrow. Blend and soften with the round angle brush
Bonus insider tip: To add more dimension and interest, brush a third color over the eyeball up to the crease/contour color. This color can be light and used for color effect, or it can be deeper and smoky. Play with it!
Problem: No matter what kind of eyeshadow or eyeliner I use, my eyes never pop! What can I do?
Tip: Put your eyes back on centerstage by going back a step and cleaning your “canvas” before applying color. Use Smooch! Studio’s Triple Threat - Correct & Perfect concealer & Stay Put shadow base to get rid of dark circles & brighten, then top with HD setting powder.
Trick: Beginning on the very inner part of the eye, against the bridge of the nose, apply the concealer. Brush it all the way under the eye taking it all the way up under the lash line. Next, apply Smooch! Studio’s exclusive ‘Stay Put’ product on the eyelid from lash to brow and Voila! Top with HD setting powder for ultimate crease-free staying power and Pop goes your eyes.
Problem: Should I wear eyeliner on the bottom only, top only, or both? What can I do if I’m tired of black and brown?
Tip: There is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answer for eyeliner! It’s all about the look you are going for. In general, we suggest always taking your eyeliner all the way across the top of the eyelid. It takes attention away from the lid and puts it onto the eye. Get it as close to the lash line as possible. Putting eyeliner across the bottom lashline can also add a nice frame.
Trick: Lining the top of the lid: Start by looking at yourself in the mirror and lifting your chin. Either close one eye or look downward. Apply the eyeliner in short dashes, getting it as close to the lash line as possible. To clean up rough edges, use a Q-tip and push the liner down into the lash line to blend it. Lining the bottom lid: Look at yourself in the mirror, put your chin down and look up with your eyes. Apply as close to the lashline as you can. For a subtle look, start in the outer corner with a wider stroke and let the line fade into the lash line, getting skinnier as it gets longer. For a stronger look, take the liner all the way in, again, allowing the liner to be wider in the outer corner and get thinner as you get closer to the inner eye.
Warning: If your eye is a picture, then eyeliner is the frame. Use eyeliner as a tool to highlight the eye, not show off the liner.
